Together, they will participate in the "Protect Automotive Cyber Security" program as part of the government's efforts to make the UK a global hub for the development, testing, and commercialization of autonomous vehicles. The Secretary of Commerce and Energy, Greg Clarke, said: "The competition for the development of networking and driverless vehicles is intensifying. As a government, we are determined to build our own advantages and ensure that Britain is at the forefront of the revolution."
Specifically, the alliance will develop an industry safety assurance standard to ensure that all components and systems used in vehicles are tested and comply with relevant cybersecurity standards. The standard is a star rating system for the security of driverless car cyber attacks, similar to the European NCAP (European New Car Collision Test) rating for car crash safety. Therefore, this is good news for the connected car industry, consumers and insurance companies, although it is not yet clear which safety standards the alliance will develop.
