For decades, "Moore's Law" has been the "golden rule" of the chip industry - when the price remains the same, the number of components that can be accommodated on an integrated circuit can double about every 18-24 months, Performance will also double. However, as nanotechnology approaches the limit of monoatoms, the growth rate of the chip industry has slowed down in recent years. The good news is that researchers at Cambridge and Warwick have jumped straight to the "logical end" - narrowing the wire to the width of a single atom string!
By injecting tellurium into carbon nanotubes, researchers have created the "thinnest" nanowires in the world.
In fact, there is no pure one-dimensional (1D) or two-dimensional (2D) material in the 3D world. It is also thick even for a thin sheet of paper, but to simplify thinking we can think of graphene, a monatomic layer material, as having only length and width.
This concept of "one-dimensional very polar nanowires" has something in common with two-dimensional graphene materials. It is made of tellurium element, only single atom width and height. But for stability reasons, researchers still "trapped" it in carbon nanotubes.
However, this single-atom microscopic scale also poses problems, such as the fact that atoms often deduce behavior that is inconsistent with the scientist's vision. In addition, the lack of structural constraints, one-dimensional material is very easy to decompose.
Papers for a Paulo Medeiros said:
When working with a material that is so small on a scale, it is often necessary to place it on a surface. The problem, however, is that these surfaces are usually reactive.
The good news is that carbon nanotubes are chemically inert and can not only fix this one-dimensional structure without affecting its conductivity.
However, this is only the beginning of our systematic understanding of the physical and chemical properties of one-dimensional materials. There are still many basic physical knowledge waiting for us to uncover.
In addition, the team found that by changing the nanotube diameter, they were able to control other tellurium properties. Often, this element is a semiconductor. But under the most restrictive conditions, it acts more like a metal.
Making these gauge wires helps to further reduce the loss of electronic circuits and inject more power into portable devices such as cell phones and wearables. For more information on this study, please also read the ACS Nano issue of the recently published American Chemical Society.
